The
CGC Juniper breaking her way through ice in the
Great Lakes on February 12, 1996.
These
new JUNIPER Class buoy tenders have since been replacing the
older 180' "C" Class buoy tenders like the
Bramble.
They are currently constructed in ship yards at
Marinette, Wisconsin (Northeast Lake Michigan just inside
Green Bay).
The
advanced feature of the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) uses
a Differential Global Positioning System to fix the vessel's
location. The vessel's position will be able to be held within
a 10-meter circle in winds of up to 30 knots and waves of up
to 8 feet. Quite a task for a vessel of this size.
Visit
her sister USCGC vessels; the Great Lakes based
Alder, and
West Coast based
Spar for
more information and photographs.
