The USCGC ALDER's primary mission is aids to navigation. These aids help provide the merchant fleet along with private vessels with their safe navigation of the Great lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Above she is in the process of setting bouys along the East Channel entrance to Munising Bay in Munising, Michigan.

The USCGC ALDER usually runs buoy operations along Lake Superior in early winter and again in early spring. This process runs for 8 to 10 weeks for both "commissioning" and "decommissioning".

Buoy Deck Area: 2,875 square feet

Inflatable Boat: 22 foot, rigid hull

Work Boat: 24 foot, aluminum

Buoy Crane

Boom length: 40 to 60 feet

Main Hoist Capacity: 40,000 lbs.

Aux. Hoist Capacity: 10,000 lbs.
