History : This
Light and breakwater were constructed to give shelter to ships loading
at the Presque
Isle ore docks in Marquette's Upper Harbor. Here the Lake Freighters load up with taconite (iron ore
pellets) from the Cleveland Cliffs Ore Dock. The Western Upper Peninsula
of Michigan is very
rich in iron ore, and this is one of a hand full of locations along the
Lake Superior shoreline with this
type of historic and unique loading docks.

LEE H. TREGURTHA is setting up to take on a load of
taconite (iron ore) pellets on December 9, 2006. To help give
perspective of the size of these vessels and the ore dock, along the top
a line of hopper type train cars is visible.
