History : Located
atop the breathtaking sandstone cliffs, this light could be seen far out
into Lake Superior during the late part of the 19th century and early
part of the 20th. Located on Munising Bay and protected by Grand Island,
the City of Munising was a focal point for much maritime commerce, .
Munising Bay was also
used many times by ships seeking shelter from the quickly changing
conditions of Lake Superior. The Light
here was a welcome sight to many sailors caught up in Superiors rage
and surely saved many lives. As toward the middle
part of the 21st century, Munising maritime commerce decreased which brought
about de-activation of the lighthouse in 1961. The lighthouse has since
been replaced by an automated, mast mounted beacon.
Grand Island itself is one of
Michigan's great natural wonders. In 1990 she was designated as a National Recreation Area, and
can be visited be taking a ferry that makes twice daily trips from
Munising throughout the summer months.
