Construction :  Square / Integral, cast iron and brick.

Status : Active

Access : Car, with parking near the light on the North side of the Harbor entrance. It's a short walk over to the light across the bridge.

South Breakwater Inner

Construction :  Skeletal, Cast Iron

Status : Active

Location : Entrance to Duluth Harbor, South breakwater

Height : 67 feet

Access : Car, with parking near the light on the North side of the Harbor entrance. It's a short walk over to the light across the bridge.

North Breakwater Light History : The conical tower was completed in April of 1910 and is resting on a concrete base. It is 10'-6' in diameter at the base and 8'-0" at the top. The lantern room is made of cast iron frame work with an octagonal shape. The lens focal plane is at 44 feet above lake level with a total tower height of 37 feet. The lens, made by Henri Le Paute of Paris in 1882, is of the Fourth Order Fresnel type. It consists of (4) panels with a central drum.

South Breakwater Outer Light History : The Lighthouse was constructed in 1901 on the pier extension added to the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. This rectangular brick building has the light tower in the Northwest corner. The tower is 35 feet tall with a lens focal plane of 44 feet above lake level with the lantern area measuring 8'-4" in diameter. The Fourth Order Fresnel lens was constructed by Barbier and Fenestre of Paris in 1877.

South Breakwater Inner Light (Rear Range) History :  The photo on the right shows the original light that was built in 1891. Replaced by the current one (in the left photo above) in 1901. In the left photo you can also see the original outer range light in the distance.
