History : The Light was
constructed to help guide ships traversing Lake Superior around the
Keweenaw Peninsula and into Copper Harbor. The lighthouse originally
constructed in 1849 was located near the site of the new steel tower aid
to navigation. The current lighthouse was taken out of commission in
1927 and replaced with the new steel tower which uses the same lantern.

A man by the name of Douglas Houghton was the first
to find the rich copper veins of this area and started the first copper
mine in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The above photograph clearly shows the
rich green color of the copper seen through the cold Lake Superior
waters. |
