History
of the Light :
This light guides ships into the entrance of the Sturgeon Bay-Lake
Michigan Ship Canal from Lake Michigan. This canal provides a short cut into Southern Green
Bay and enables ships to avoid the dangerous Northern, "Death's
Door", passage around Door Peninsula.

Established
in 1882, this extensive light station consists of the large
light tower with three dwellings and additional storage
buildings. The original lighthouse was first lit in 1882 with a
Sixth Order Fresnel lens.
