Manistique East Breakwater

Manistique, MI

Built :  1915

Type : Square, Steel

Status : Active

Location : Manistique, MI

Height : 35 feet

Access : Car, with a short walk on the breakwater.

Directions : From US-2 turn South into Lakeview Park which will take you to the Light.

History of the Light : Like the Grand Haven and Muskegon lights, the Manistique is also red in color. This day-mark lets the sailor know that the channel is to the left of the light when approaching from the open water. The base of this light is 14 feet square. The original fourth order Fresnel lens created a focal plane at 50 feet above lake level.

The light was automated in 1969.

Restored by Nick Johnston and Joseph Cocking (Lampist) in Charleston South Carolina in 1993-1994, the original Fourth Order Fresnel is now on display at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
