Gary Breakwater

Gary, IN

Built :  1911

Type : Conical, steel

Status : Active

Location : Gary, IN

Height : 40 feet

Access : Boat, at end of West pierhead.

History of the Light : The red, conical steel light tower stands on a round concrete crib at the end of the Western breakwater. The original lantern room still houses a sixth order Fresnel lens which can be used as an auxiliary light. There is a modern lantern mounted above the ventilator ball, which is the active light used. This light creates a lens focal plane at 40 feet above low water datum.
