History
of the Light :
Like the towns of Muskegon and Whitehall, Grand
Haven was primarily a logging and fishing town in the late 1800's. The
growing commerce required the construction of this light in 1875. The
outer building was originally positioned where the newer rear range
light stands. Numerous extensions of the pier, for better protection in
the harbor, required the light to be moved out a few hundred yards in
1905. The construction of the steel rear range light was done at that
time. In 1922 the outer building was covered with iron sheets to help
protect the wood from the elements. Today ships of 700 feet in length are still entering
the Grand River with one problem, they are unable to turn around. It's
quite a sight to see them back out of the river from about a
mile inland.
Area
Attractions: Grand Haven is one of the most historically significant towns
in Michigan, located where the Grand Haven River meets Lake
Michigan. Grand Haven is a popular boating and fishing town,
and has a big fleet of salmon charters. The area offers 175
miles of bike paths, two miles of board walk along the river,
golf courses and lots of shops and restaurants.
