History of the Light : Another of the 5 Lights known as the "Tall 5", being over 100 feet in height. This Light guides ships around Big Sable Point, originally called Grande Point Au Sable. The Light was first built of brick only, till the early 1900's when it started to deteriorate and was encased in iron plates. Cement was then poured between the plates and the brick. The black stripe painted in the middle serves as a day mark. By 1970's it was endanger of washing away, and was to be replaced. The Big Sable Lighthouse Keeper's Association stepped in and saved the light. Although the Light is a 1.5 mile hike away, its well worth the journey.
