Lighthouse History : This Light shares the honor of being the first Lighthouse on Lake Erie with the Buffalo Light, Both being lit in 1818. The Light that stands today is actually the 3rd Lighthouse to be constructed here. The first Light over time had sunk so badly she was torn down. The second light was constructed only to see the same fait in only eight years. Finally a conscientious engineer  took boring samples to find quicksand laying under the light. Adjustments were taken and the 3rd Light was constructed, which still stands today. She saw another 33 years of service before deactivated in 1901. Her Fresnal Lens was then removed and taken to Marblehead Lighthouse. Since then the Light has been preserved well.
