Lighthouse History : Constructed of the local beach stone with 2 foot thick walls, the tower still stands after all these years. She was built in response to the opening of the Erie Canal and the increased traffic that would travel this area. What makes this light so unique is the fact that she was powered by natural gas. This was the first Lighthouse in the world and the first public building in the U.S. to be powered by nature gas. A nearby pocket of natural gas was found under a creek bed. The gas was then piped over to the lighthouse to power the lantern.
