Lighthouse
History: In 1825, the first lighthouse was
constructed in Key West at Whitehead Point. The tower stood 65 feet tall
and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846. Fourteen of the people, that
had entered the lighthouse to ride-out the storm, lost their lives.
In
1826 a new lighthouse had been completed on higher ground standing 66
feet tall. This brick structure was reworked in 1894 to add 20 feet to
it's height. Now standing 86 feet tall, it produced an un-obstructed red
& white constant beacon with a lens focal plane of 96 feet.
