Lighthouse History: In 1825, the first lighthouse was constructed in Key West at Whitehead Point. The tower stood 65 feet tall and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846. Fourteen of the people, that had entered the lighthouse to ride-out the storm, lost their lives.
Area Attractions: This lighthouse and keeper's quarters can be visited and toured year-round. Lighthouse and Museum hours are 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. daily. The island of Key West offers much to do and see. The entire length of Duval Street is full of shops, restaurants and clubs with an aquarium, museum and much more to see at the North end. Near the lighthouse is Ernest Hemingway's house, open for tours. A majority of the island attractions are within walking distance. In
1826 a new lighthouse had been completed on higher ground standing 66
feet tall. This brick structure was reworked in 1894 to add 20 feet to
it's height. Now standing 86 feet tall, it produced an un-obstructed red
& white constant beacon with a lens focal plane of 96 feet.
