This part of the St. Lawrence Seaway fills the gap between lakes Huron and Erie. With the large industry of Detroit (The Motor City) and iron ore being shipped from the North, this area plays a major role in commerce of the Great Lakes. With water depths in this region being very shallow, the lighthouses play a very important part in the safe passage of vessels.
