History
of LV89: This lightship marked a shoal known
as Martin Reef which is located between the Straits of Mackinac and
the St. Mary's River that is only (10) feet from the surface. As many ships
travel this area heading to and from Lake Michigan, the lightship
"MARTIN" was stationed here from 1909 to 1927 marking
the dangerous area. Her hull markings were originally "89 MARTIN
REEF 89" until 1913. The markings were then displayed as seen
in the photograph above until 1927.
In
1927 she was reassigned to North Manitou Shoal which is located in
Northern Lake Michigan just Southeast of North Manitou Island, MI.
She
then operated as a relief vessel from 1934 until being retired from
service in 1936.
