The Lake Erie Islands are blanketed with beauty and played a significant role in political History. The War of 1812 and the Upper Canadian Rebellion of 1837 involved these islands as positions of strategic importance.

South Bass Island is home to the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. This was built to honor the American Victory in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10,1813. The battle took place approximately 10 to 12 miles Northwest of South Bass Island. American Oliver Hazard Perry and Britain's Robert Heriott Barclay were the naval commanders of this historical event.
