Lake
Superior is the largest of the 5 Great Lakes fed by diversions through
Long Lake in Long Lac, Ontario and Lake Nipigon in Ogoki, Ontario. An
average of 5.300 cubic feet of water per second enters her Northern
shoreline through these 2 diversions. Both diversions have been in
operation since the early 1940's with water coming from the Hudson Bay
watershed. The outflow of this water is controlled by a 16 gate
control structure, 5 navigation locks, 3 hydropower plants and the St.
Mary's Rapids in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Michigan. Lake Superior has
an average outflow of 76,000 cubic feet per second.
