Leland
Harbor is sponsored
by the Michigan State Waterways Commission. The Carp River empties
into the harbor as seen in the above photograph. Maintaining much of
it's old time fishing town features, Leland (also known as
"Fishtown") is one of the premier stops along the
lake Michigan shoreline.
Two
fishing companies still operate out of the harbor with fish
being sold daily to the public. There are many specialty store
to browse through along with a grocery store for all your daily
needs. There are also many fine restaurants within walking
distance of the harbor. A community library and the Leelanau
Historical Museum are also worth a visit.
If
you like to fish, many charter fishing services operate out of
the harbor.
The Sleeping
Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is located nearby with North and South
Manitou Islands being part of it.
Leland
was primarily a fishing, lumbering and ship town. It has since
changed into summer vacation spot for many people throughout the
Great Lakes region.
