The
South Haven Harbor is sponsored
by the Michigan State Waterways Commission and located just inside the
entrance to the Black River.
Trappers
and loggers first started settling here in the mid 1700's. The Black
River was widened in the 1860's to allow the larger sailing ships to
turn around. They were primarily transporting lumber, farm produce
and furs out of South Haven at that time. The port eventually became
a major vacation destination for people steaming in on ships from
Chicago. It has now become a popular sport fishing and yachting port
of call.
A
great local attraction is the Michigan Maritime Museum. it is
located about 3/4 of a mile up the Black River with dockage
available for museum visitors. Call the South haven Municipal
Marina for dockage reservations. This museum concentrates on the
vessels and maritime men of the State of Michigan. It covers
everything from the Native American Indians and their canoes to
the modern vessels of today.
