Holland
Harbor is part of Michigan's Recreational Harbor Program. The
harbor is located just off of Lake Michigan at the Western end
of Lake Macatawa. Two large breakwaters and a bright red
lighthouse mark the entrance.
Attractions:
Every year, in Mid-May, over 500,000 people come to enjoy the
colorful Tulip Festival. Tulip blossoms of many different
varieties line the streets and boulevards.
History:
In 1847, a group of Dutch immigrants founded the city of
Holland. Originally lumbering was the main source of commerce in
this area. By the late 1800's the exhaustion of the timber
supply brought lumbering to a quick halt. Raw materials were
then brought in by water for manufacture of a variety of
other products changing Holland's commerce. The growing of fruit
and tourism also help to maintain the local economy to this day.
